Key Points in the Percutaneous Ablation Treatment of Osteoid Osteomas
- Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor, relatively common (10% of all bone tumors). It is more frequent in young male patients and is characterized by nocturnal pain that responds to NSAIDs.
- Radiofrequency (RF) or microwave ablation is the treatment of choice for OO.
- CT-guided ablation of OO is a safe technique with a high rate of clinical success. Treatment failure occurs in less than 10% of cases, decreasing to 3% when a second procedure is performed.
- Ablative treatment of OO has a low complication rate. The placement of cold compresses around the antenna, like a scarf, helps prevent skin burns.
- The type of antenna used, the duration of the procedure, the patient’s age, and the lesion location are not associated with clinical failure.
