Key Points in the Placement of Hickman/Broviac Central Venous Catheters

• These are external central venous catheters with a tunneled portion, made of a polymer (silicone) and available with one, two, or three lumens. They are considered long-term catheters (over 6 months), with internal calibers ranging from 3 to 14 Fr.
• They have multiple uses, the most common being chemotherapy infusion, transfusion of blood products, blood sampling, parenteral nutrition, and collection or reinfusion of hematopoietic precursors (apheresis).
• They are inserted via the subclavian or jugular vein and include two closure systems: a clamp and a cap on the luer-lock. In addition, they feature a Dacron cuff for fixation to the skin.
• Proper care and maintenance are essential for catheter longevity. It is necessary to prevent complications such as infections and thrombosis.
